What's a Mentor?

"Wait, what is academic mentoring? " Explaining the differences between mentoring and tutoring has become somewhat of a regular conversation. To analogize it simply, an academic mentor is like the head coach of a football team and a tutor is like the offensive/defensive coordinator. Each has their job to do, but the coach has to see the overall "big picture". As academic mentors and learning strategists, we look at the entirety of a student's academic work. By establishing healthy relationships with the student, parent and teachers, much of the uncertainty begins to disappear. So much so, that parents often tell us how their relationship with their child improves with regard to school and homework.

As mentors, we work with students to improve organization, develop and determine learning styles that work for them, and set attainable goals. My experience in the classroom has shown me that all students have strengths and weaknesses. Our goal is to nurture the strengths while helping them overcome their weaknesses. Through academic mentoring, this can be achieved.
